To fairly compare, I needed to scale out Redis so that it uses multiple cores on each AWS EC2 instance. For the benchmark tests, I compared both as simple key-value stores. By contrast, Redis is built primarily as a fast in memory store.Īerospike is multithreaded and Redis is single threaded. Aerospike is built to be extremely fast by leveraging SSDs for persistence and to be very easy to scale. Both databases are known for speed and are often used for caching or as fast key value stores via in-memory implementation. I tested two NoSQL databases – Aerospike and Redis. In the process of validating benchmarks, I learned many broadly applicable AWS-specificEC2 benchmarking practices that I will include. I’ll also discuss benchmarking techniques & results for this particular set of test databases. These foundational principles make the server easy to manage, perform at high speeds, scale horizontally and provide the highest availability. In this post I’ll summarize what I learned from running benchmark tests on virtual machines on the AWS Cloud with the Aerospike team and also as I validated their test results independently. This gives Couchbase performance characteristics of a cache and the durability of a database. The Server currently organically consolidates the caching tier and the database tier. That bold vision meant that the architecture had to support a large variety of use cases and a future laden with exponentially growing scalability performance and usability requirements. More details will be available in the full July report.Ĭouchbase Server was designed from a simple, yet bold vision: build the first general purpose NoSQL database. Running each database on dedicated hardware backed by SSD storage.Keeping 90% of the dataset in RAM to achieve the highest performance.Use of the Yahoo! Cloud Serving Benchmark.Tested database versions: Couchbase 2.5, DataStax 2.0.7 and MongoDB 2.6.1.Thumbtack Technology provided the testing parameters to ensure that anyone wanting to replicate the tests is able to do so. The first emulated a typical application of 95% reads and 5% writes and the second emulated peak write loads, with 50% reads and 50% writes. Thumbtack Technology ran two classic use case scenarios. The company has led production implementations at client sites for all versions of the databases tested and worked directly with each vendor to ensure optimal configuration for each of the tests. The new benchmark, conducted by Thumbtack Technology, was done with the goal of comparing several popular NoSQL databases in simple and common use cases. ![]() We believe this study does that quite well, and as a result, we are confident in our results that Couchbase Server 2.5 outperforms the competition on all measures.” “Our intention with this benchmark is to provide a current set of metrics for database performance that is easy for others to verify and duplicate. ![]() We have implemented almost all the leading NoSQL vendors – including the three tested in this benchmark,” said Ben Engber, Thumbtack Technologies. “Thumbtack works with organizations around the world to build and deploy scalable solutions. ![]()
